Description:
The Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria was established in 1961 under the auspices of the Ford Foundation, to provide an educational broadcasting service based on the national guidelines of the curriculum.

Broadcast programmes are produced on guidelines of the syllabus as provided by NERDC (Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council). The Corporation receives the cooperation of producers (and sometimes consultants) to produce scripts. Producers receive feedback from teachers.

The education is formal, relating to syllabi for primary, secondary and teacher-training education. The subjects taught are: for Primary, Stories for Children, and Speaking English; for Secondary, Biology, French, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Introductory Technology, Geography, Mathematics, Agricultural Science; and for Teacher Training Colleges, Child Psychology, Principles and Practice of Education, Guidance and Counselling.

All educational institutions are eligible.

Services:
Media and methods include radio broadcasts, print-notes for teachers published (not since 1983) three times per year on science, primary and post-primary education. Also master tapes produced for broadcast via radio stations in Enugu, Ibadan and Kaduna.

Producers will duplicate tapes for a fee.

Lack of financial resources led to notes for teachers being discontinued.

There is no formal registration required. Any school or college can tune in to the programmes. The programmes run throughout the year.

There are 10 producers covering various disciplines - all graduates with either teaching experience or with teacher qualification. Technical and administrative backup is provided from a pool of FRCN staff.
